“I finally kissed Selena!” David crows, not at all observing the ‘keep your voice down, you aren’t supposed to be here’ rule. “I went home for family dinner tonight—Theresa was making meatloaf, which sounds like a bad idea until you try Theresa’s, man, seriously—and afterwards we were just sitting on the front porch, and Sel was making fun of me and I just, I don’t know, shit, Jonas, I finally fucking kissed her.”
“I love that this story begins with you going home for family dinner,” Nick says, but David looks so thrilled that Nick doesn’t really have it in him to keep mocking him. “She kiss you back?”
David rolls his eyes. “What do you think?”
“I think it’s safe to say you’re officially hitting it with your stepsister,” Nick says, grinning. “Congratulations, man. Thanks for making me feel like less of a relationship freak. I’m happy for you guys.”
It’s nice to say that and mean it. Henrie’s sort of his ex, he guesses, in some ways, and it’s nice to not begrudge David finding somebody who makes him happy. It’s nice not to be bitter and jealous about something.
“Thanks,” David says, breaking back into that ear-to-ear beaming grin. Then he lets out a whoop and throws his arms around Nick in a huge hug, just so psyched, it’s kind of adorable on him.
