I love Selena, but this kind of cultural appropriation makes me uncomfortable. First of all, it’s like they just took a part of a Hindi song and placed it at the beginning of her song. During her MTV Movie Awards performance, she was wearing a bindi and was clearly trying to do some “Bollywood” type of dance moves.

She looked really pretty and the song’s even grown on me, but I have a problem with the fact that she’s never even acknowledged the influences. In fact, she called it “tribal.” What the fuck? What does that even mean? IT’S NOT TRIBAL,  YOU’RE JUST TAKING CERTAIN ASPECTS OF ANOTHER CULTURE AND INSERTING IT INTO YOUR SONG AND PERFORMANCE SO THAT IT LOOKS COOLER AND DIFFERENT.

This isn’t solely Selena’s fault, obviously. She has producers who work with her, stylists who chose her outfit, and choreographers who chose those dance moves. They probably don’t know any better and don’t understand cultural appropriation, but that’s why this kind of discussion is important.
